Subject: Redondo Beach Pistol Range Ammunition
Mr. Webb,
My name is Harry Stuver and I am the spokesman from CRAPRR.
Our last correspondence was back in June 2008 concerning noise and lead at the Redondo Beach Pistol Range.
Today I visited the pistol range to try to find out what type of ammunition is being fired from the guns. I understand from published newspaper reports that the department has switched to a lead free “frangible” bullet.
On 5/6/09 at 5:45pm I called the Redondo Beach Police department to arrange for a police officer to show us what the ammunition looks like as there were a few policemen shooting at the time at the range. I was told by the dispatcher that we would be meet outside the range.
At 6:13pm the police stopped shooting and left the location without giving us even a look.
We waited and finally at 6:43pm Sergeant Burks ?? arrived and told use to talk to you.
Our concern is …
1. How can we as citizens guarantee the ammunition the officers are shooting is always lead free? Must we take their words for it? We would like random spot checks to ensure complete compliance. Can you arrange for us to visit the range as public citizens to inspect the ammunition in use?
2. The use of this special ammunition at the range…is this what is used in the field? If I understand this correct the police train with one type of ammunition and use a different round in real life situations?
